Summary
NotebookLM is an AI-powered collaborator that for all active faculty, staff, and students to use for free. Create notebooks by uploading your sources in various formats such as Google Docs and slides, PDFs, web URLs, copied text, YouTube URLs. You can then ask questions about the information in your sources and NotebookLM will respond with an answer and inline citations. These citations show you where in the sources the answer is based on. This guide is for getting started.

Access and Availability
With exception to clinical departments, all active VCU faculty, staff, and students automatically have access to NotebookLM. Employees of clinical departments may submit a ticket to Collaboration Services to request access for themselves or others.
To begin using NotebookLM, visit https://notebooklm.google.com and log in with your VCU email address.
Important Considerations
There are limitations:
- Data Security: VCU data is kept in a secured environment with data protection enabled ensuring data isn’t used or human-reviewed to train any AI models. NotebookLM is approved for use with Cat II data and is considered a Core Service covered under Google Workspace for Education Terms of Service.
CAUTION: NotebookLM is not approved for use with Protected Health Information (PHI). PHI data must not be entered into NotebookLM
