Set up a Section in your Canvas Course for Students with an Incomplete Status

Updated

Summary

These instructions tell you how to create a section in your Canvas course so that a student can still access the course if they cannot finish the class within a single semester and have been granted an incomplete status.

Solution

Note: These steps must be followed before the end of the current semester and the term dates end. After this point, the course will be moved to "Concluded" status, limiting faculty and student access.

1. Fill out the Incomplete Grade Assignment Form.

2. Add a Section to the Course named "Incompletes" or whatever best suits your needs.

3. Change the default end date for that particular section to the timeframe you and the student(s) will need to complete the course and grading.

Note:

  • If you have multiple students with an incomplete status but need different access dates or if you need longer access to the course in order to complete your grading but do not want the students to still have access, you will need to create additional sections with those specific date needs.
  • When changing these dates be sure to check the "Students can only participate in the course between these dates" box.

4. From the course navigation menu, click People.

5. Add users to the newly created section.

Note: The instructor (you) and each student with an incomplete must be added to this newly created section(s).

You will know you are successful because when you go to the People page, the section name will be listed under the Section column beside their name.
