Problem: Apple laptop has no power or won't turn on

Summary

Basic steps to try when a computer does not turn on. Sometimes a laptop is not charging right or is stuck in an update state and will seem to be dead, but can be fixed without a major repair.

Symptoms

The computer does not turn on or has a blank screen.

Environment

Apple laptops, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air

Solution

Try these steps in order:

  • Hold the power button for ten seconds, wait a few seconds, then press power again.
  • Check the power adapter is the right wattage for your computer and is an Apple-branded adapter.
  • Check the power adapter and charging cable for damage. Damage to the cable could include yellowing, bulging, kinking, and fraying. Damage might include bent pins or plugs.
  • Use a known-good power adapter and charging cable in a working power outlet. Leave the laptop plugged in for ten minutes before trying to turn it on.
  • Look and listen for signs of power. If the caps lock light turns on when pressed, the keyboard backlight comes on or the fan is spinning, then the computer has power but no video. Contact IT for further help with a hardware repair.

Outcome

Either the issue is fixed and the computer now turns on, or a hardware problem in the device has been found, and further service is needed.
